Courses & Classes in Sewing

All classes meet once a week for 4 weeks unless otherwise noted.

CLASS SUPPLY LIST- please bring to the first day of class: sewing machine with power cord, pedal, and accessories; all-purpose thread; a small multi-pack of universal sewing machine needles, size 70/10 and 80/12; hand-sewing needles, seam ripper, and sharp scissors.

SEWING 101: Beginner
Section 1: 10:00-12:00PM
Section 2: 6:00-8:00PM
A one-time class for the absolute beginner or those who need a refresher. Class covers the basics: how to choose the right needle and thread, wind a bobbin and thread a machine, sew a few stitches, and troubleshoot your machine. Class is mandatory for those enrolled in Sewing I with no prior sewing experience. Students must bring their personal sewing machines and items from the class supply list at the top of this page.
MAXIMUM ENROLLMENT: 10 students per section.
Malia Peoples      $50.00 (no enrollment fee for students taking this class only). Class is free if enrolled in Sewing I.

SEWING TECHNIQUES I: Basic
Section 1: 10:00-12:30PM
Section 2: 6:00-8:30PM
Students master the proper execution of 20 basic, fine dress-making techniques. Students must bring their personal sewing machines and items from the class supply list at the top of this page. For those students with no prior sewing experience, Sewing 101 is mandatory (see above).

SEWING TECHNIQUES II: Intermediate

This class is a continuation of Sewing Techniques I, in which students master the proper execution of a second set of 20 intermediate, fine dress-making techniques. Students must bring their personal sewing machine and items from the class supply list at the top of this page.
Prerequisite: Sewing Techniques I.

SEWING TECHNIQUES III: Advanced

This class is a continuation of Sewing Techniques II, in which students master the proper execution of a third set of 20 advanced, fine dress-making techniques. Students must bring their personal sewing machine and items from the class supply list at the top of this page.

SEWING TECHNIQUES IV: Tailoring
Thursdays 6:00-8:30PM
Duration: 4 weeks
In this advanced class, students master the sewing techniques employed in tailored garment construction such as notch collar, welt pocket, two-piece set-in sleeve. Students must bring their personal sewing machine.
Prerequisite: Sewing I, II, III; Construction I, II, III.

SEWING TECHNIQUES V: Knits
1 Saturday: 10:00AM-3:00PM
Duration: 1 day
Students master the techniques necessary to sew knit fabrics. Students construct a simple knit garment. Students must bring their personal sewing machine.
Prerequisite: Pattern Drafting II; Sewing Techniques I and II.

SEWING TECHNIQUES VI: Leather*
Night/Weekend Class: Call school for dates.
Students master the techniques necessary to sew leathers and simulated leathers. Students must bring their personal sewing machine.
Prerequisite: Sewing Techniques I, II, III

CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES I: Basic, Skirt

Students master the techniques employed in the construction of the skirt. Students must bring their personal sewing machines and items from the class supply list at the top of this page.
Prerequisite: Sewing I, II, III.

Students master the techniques employed in the construction of the collared shirt. Students must bring their personal sewing machines.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES III: Advanced, Pant

Students master the techniques employed in the construction of the pant. Students must bring their personal sewing machines.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES IV: Advanced, Black Dress
Thursdays 6:00-8:30PM
Duration: 4 weeks
Students cut and sew, in real woven fabric, a basic black presentation dress which they have designed and drafted from their personal pattern sloper. Students must bring their personal sewing machine and supply fabric and findings subject to instructor approval.
Prerequisite: Pattern Making I, II, II; Personal Pattern Sloper I; Sewing I, II, III; Construction I, II, III.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES V: Advanced, Corset Making*
Fridays 10:00-2:00PM
Duration: 4 weeks
Students will cut out and construct the basic boned corset foundation garment, while learning appropriate sewing and construction techniques and proper fitting. Course results in the student's own personal wearable garment. Students must register for and be measured one quarter in advance of enrollment. Students must bring their personal sewing machine.
Prerequisite: Sewing I, II, III.
